What is lorem ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin placeholder text used in publishing and design to show how a layout looks before the real copy exists. Its source is Cicero's philosophical treatise De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), written in the 1st century BC. At some point — tradition says an anonymous printer in the 1500s — a passage of that text was jumbled to make a type specimen book, cutting and scrambling words like "do lorem" into "lorem" until the passage became unreadable nonsense.
The scrambled text survived five centuries of printing history and jumped into the digital era in the 1960s, when Letraset dry-transfer sheets carried it onto countless posters and layouts. Desktop publishing sealed its fame: Aldus PageMaker shipped with lorem ipsum templates in the 1980s, and designers have been pasting it ever since.
Why designers use placeholder text
Real draft copy is a distraction. When stakeholders review a mockup filled with genuine sentences, they critique the words instead of the design. Lorem ipsum has a natural distribution of word lengths and a realistic rhythm — it looks like language without meaning anything — so attention stays on typography, spacing, hierarchy, and color. It lets you judge whether a headline area feels too cramped or whether body columns are readable long before a single word of final copy is written.
Paragraphs vs sentences vs words
Paragraphs are best for page-level mockups: blog posts, articles, landing pages — anywhere multi-line text flow matters. Sentences suit smaller components such as cards, testimonials, product blurbs, or notification previews, where one or two lines are enough. Words fill tight spots: button labels, menu items, tag clouds, or any slot where you just need to see how a short string behaves. Pick the unit that matches the size of the space you're designing.
