The 7 QR Code Types

This generator supports the seven most useful QR code types. Each one encodes a different payload and triggers a different action when scanned with a smartphone camera.

URL

Opens a website in the phone browser. The most common use: link printed materials — flyers, business cards, menus, posters — to a web page.

Text

Displays any plain text on the screen after scanning. Useful for short instructions, serial numbers, coupon codes, or notes.

WiFi

Encodes the network name (SSID), password, and security type. A guest scans it and the phone offers to connect to the network instantly — no more reading passwords out loud or typing them wrong.

Email

Opens the mail app with the recipient, subject, and body pre-filled. Great for feedback cards, support contacts, and "email us" links on print.

SMS

Opens the messaging app with the number and message pre-filled. Common for hotline numbers, vote/survey campaigns, and delivery notifications.

Phone

Opens the dialer with the number ready to call. Ideal on business cards and storefronts so customers can call with one tap.

vCard

A digital business card. Scanning it offers to save the contact — name, phone, email, company, job title, and website — directly into the phone's address book.

How to Use This Generator

Pick a tab, fill the fields, and the QR code updates automatically when you leave a field. Choose the size and foreground color on the preview panel, then click Download PNG to save the image.

Tips for Better QR Codes

  • Keep the content short — shorter data produces cleaner, more reliable QR codes
  • Use at least 300x300 pixels for digital sharing, 500x500 for print
  • Maintain high contrast: dark foreground on white background scans best
  • Always test the QR code with your phone camera before printing
  • For WiFi codes with special characters in the password, test the connection after printing

The QR code image is generated through the free goqr.me public API (api.qrserver.com), so an internet connection is required. Note that the data you encode is sent to the API as part of the image URL — avoid creating QR codes that contain passwords for sensitive networks or private information.

Frequently asked questions

What types of QR codes can I create?
Seven types: URL links, plain text, WiFi network credentials, email drafts, SMS messages, phone numbers, and vCard contact cards. Each type opens a different action when scanned with a phone camera.
How does a WiFi QR code work?
A WiFi QR code encodes your network name (SSID), password, and security type. When a guest scans it with their phone camera, the phone offers to connect to the network instantly without typing the password.
What is a vCard QR code?
A vCard QR code contains your contact details: name, phone, email, company, job title, and website. When scanned, the phone offers to save the contact directly to the address book.
Can I change the QR code color?
Yes. This tool lets you choose a custom foreground color using a color picker. The background is always white for maximum scannability across all devices and scanners.
Is the QR code scannable after download?
Yes. The generated QR codes use standard encoding and are fully scannable by any QR reader or smartphone camera. Choose a sufficient size (at least 200x200) for reliable scanning.
What is the best size for a QR code?
For digital use, 300x300 or 400x400 pixels works well. For print, larger sizes like 500x500 are better. The key is ensuring the QR code has enough quiet space around it and is at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide when printed.
Does this QR code generator work offline?
No. The QR code image is generated by the free api.qrserver.com API, so an internet connection is required. The page itself loads from your browser cache after the first visit, but generating a new QR code needs to reach the API.
